Resolved Question: Are Green Winged Macaws good pets?

Trying to decide on what bird I should get. I've posted a few questions about this. I love the African Grey but I can't find anyone who breeds them in WA. I actually don't think the quarantine laws allow them in WA. My next choice is the Green Winged Macaw. If anyone has one I'd love to hear how they are as pets. BTW: I already have a Sun Conure and Cockatoo which I hand fed from infancy. I am aware of the amount of attention parrots require, their destructive nature, high noise levels, versatile diet, aviary size etc. So don't worry, I know what I'm getting myself into.WA = Western Australia more

Resolved Question: Why do the parrots hate my partner?

We recently bought two African Grey parrots as pets. When we first got them they were fine and liked us both. A few weeks later one parrot seemed extremely scared of my partner and flapped around like he was about to kill it. We phoned our friend who bred them and said that we probably got a cock and a hen as it is almost impossible to sex parrots w/out a blood test. Even though he hated him the other one liked him but now they both seem extremely frightened. However, when I go to the cage they come over and aren't scared at all. Please can you help if there is anything we can do as otherwise there is no point having pets if they dont like us. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: How do you get social, good friendly birds to breed?

Resolved Question: How can I find a contract for rehoming an African Grey. I don't want him to be rehomed after I sell him. ?

I need to re-home by african grey parrot. I need a contract stating that the buyer does not re-home (other than to me only if he's having problems with the new owner), resale, or use him for breeding purposes. How do I do this? more

Resolved Question: What kind of pet bird should i get? Experts, i need...?

details: I want a very colorful bird foremost. I would like something with crazy personality like a cockatoo but is also very affectionate and loves being taught. Nothing mean (my father told me lovebirds are mean @_@) I don't want it to be a huge bird. That will have to wait because i have limited space in my house. Any range from medium and down. (finches i would even like) If it's a medium sized bird it has to be okay being solitary without a partner. If it's a small breed i'll accept a pair. I would prefer something i can keep indoors most of the time. If light is needed there are plenty of well lit areas in my house. I am not interested in breeding. Keep in mind i have two cats and one medium sized dog... and these numbers may grow in the coming years. I live with my boyfriend, maybe later my best friend will join me, and in about a year my father will live with me too. At most there will be two-three people in the household for a maximum of 5-8 years. I plan on extending the human family in long-term goals. pet family short term. I don't mind going to a bird show to aquire it. Although i don't want to take a long trip getting there. Nothing incredibly expensive. $500 ea. at the most. I don't mind raising a youngin. questions: Could i teach a medium sized bird to spend most of it's time perched outside of a cage? If i could do that, would that reduce the minimum size of the actual cage? This is favored for medium sized birds. Back info: I haven't owned a bird myself for years. This would be like a beginner job. But we did keep many birds in the family years and years ago. The main ones I remember are parakeets, quails, an african grey, and a macaw. My dad is good at bird keeping, but he will be deployed for Iraq this month. Although he can help, it will be indirectly. The ones that have caught my eye recently are Gouldain and Strawberry finches, Citron crested cockatoos, Eclectus Parrot (female), and Harlequin and Camelot Macaws. Again, since i'm a beginner i don't mind something small and colorful, but I am willing to put the time and attention needed into this pet.  more

Resolved Question: Am I A Responsible Pet Owner?

Your Open QuestionShow me another » Am I A Responsible Animal Owner? I own seventeen animals and I was wondering if I was responsible with them. Birds/Cockatiels/Parakeets- I have two cockatiels and three parakeets. Every week I ride my bike to the local pet store and buy them their toys, cuttle bones, treats, calcium supplements, and any thing else I need while I am there. I also take them every month to an Avian Vet for their monthly check-ups. Every four months I trim their nails, and every six months I clip their wings. I let them out for about four to six hours a day. I handle (stroking them, playing ladders with them, and cuddling) them for about an hour. I am currently working on getting my cockatiels used to water. I make sure my parakeets/cockatiels have vitamin/calcium enriched food. I clean all my birds' cages each week, without using any harmful chemicals or substances. My parakeet recently is showing signs of being about to lay. This was by accident. I have loving and responsible homes lined up for them. Frogs/ White's Tree Frogs- We have three of these frogs. Each week I buy crickets for them, sometimes mealworms for a treat every so often. They go to an Exotic Vet every month for monthly check-ups. We have heating lamps to keep their color up. We have de-chlorified water for them to soak in. We also have a variety of logs, fake plants, huts for them. We play with them for about an hour each day. Cats/Himalayan Long-Haired- We have one male and female Himalayan cats. They are neutered/spayed. They shed a lot, so I daily brush their coat. i also clean their litter boxes weekly. Charlie (male) goes to the Vet once more than my other animals because he is an outdoor cat. He gets his shots every three weeks. We have decided against de-clawing them. Every month we give them cat-nip, which makes them extremely hyper, which is why we do this monthly. Misty (female) goes monthly. She was a rescue cat, and she still has a bit of behavioral issues. Dogs/Cockerspainel/Maltese/Yorkshire Terrier- Our dogs get walked every morning and night. They go outside and roam freely (fenced-in back yard), and we get them groomed every two months. We have them potty trained, and they are very people friendly. They go to a Vet every two months (we have a lot of animals!). They eat some people food, but not a lot. Rusty (cocker) has a bloodline of winning show dogs, they are all winners, it's some strict breeding thing. Rusty isn't a show dog. He's a family dog, and we have never bred him. The breeder wanted us to breed him and put him in shows, but we refused. They get treats every night before bed. They have a lot of toys! Too bad they don't know how to pick them up. Hamsters/Robo/Syrain/Russian- We have three, two dwarfs and one Syrain. We give them veggies but take them out after an hour. They get handled every day, and love to run around in their balls. We use Care Fresh bedding, not cedar. We take them to the vet every two months. We clean their cage every week. Our Syrain is so nice! We keep them all together, and our Syrain doesn't even so much as glance at them. They have three wheels in their cage. One for each. Our Robo, Sweetie, likes to use cotton balls and make a buiding out of them. Our Russian, Deadly Nightshade, has a bit of a attitude. She doesn't like to be handled when I'm holding the others. Our dwarfs make tunnels underground, so it takes about five minutes to find them. Cichlid Oscar- We named him Oscar, creative, huh? He doesn't go to a vet. He is five years old now, and he's dieing. He is immune to ick, which kind of scares me. He's not very strong, now. He doesn't go up to get air that often. We feed him crickets, small grasshoppers, and other bugs. He's about a foot long now. He used to have a buddy, but he died three years ago. Also, Oscar likes to eat small goldfish and minos, too. Volunteering- I volunteer at Animal Friends Humane Society in Trenton, Ohio.I work with the dogs, cats, rodents, and birds. I work with the small/medium sized birds. I foster home the birds, though. I have a rather large aviary that takes up half my yard. It is divided into sections that are large enough to house a African Grey parrot. The birds are not housed together. They are housed in extemely large cages, that are separated, with room to fly around. In the back area is where all the cages are, and the front is where they fly around. We have perches, cuttlebones, calcium blocks, about eight different foods for each different species of bird. The cages can hold about fifteen to twenty parakeets, if that gives you any idea of how large the cages are. I don't house large birds, they are too large for me. The birds don't fly around at one time. Each species gets about an hour of play time. So I do help the local animals. I pay for all the food, housing, vet bills, toys, treats, medical treatments, play gyms (for birds), wing/nail trimming, grooming, shots, and other necassary things by myseby myself. The only animals I don't pay for are the Yorkie and Maltese. They belong to my grandparents. No Vets will examine a fish without killing it in the process. more

Resolved Question: What would you recommend?

I was planning on getting a conure (a big no-no now) but I need a quiet parrot (by parrot standards) because my Mom is studying for tests etc. and my teenage brother ought to study and I try to study and I have a 5 year old sister who is actually pretty bright for her age. So I need recommendations for parrot breeds that are the following: Mildly quiet, very affectionate, not aggresive without a reason that humans don't understand, clowny maybe, playful, and the ability to talk is optional lol. Parrots my mom won't allow are the following: Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Macaws and African Greys. Thx in advance! .''. \''/And pionuses and lovebirds? What about them? We have a medium size house and lots of attention and love to give so even if we put them on the side of the house that we don't use for studying they'll still get a lot of attention? My mom had a bad experience with one cockatiel that my dad saved from a golf-course sand pit and now she holds a grudge against the whole breed and an african grey bit her ear till it bled once and she grew up with a macaw that screeched non-stop and a for cockatoos, she just thinks that they bite...Turns out my mom doesn't hold a grudge against cockotiels lol! I just misunderstood her because she was very firm, she wants a logical reason for me to get that breed in particular and lots of info lol! And she also said that she dislikes cokatoos because one bit her on the ear just like the grey lol! more

Resolved Question: Dog questions??? (WARNING long questions.)

OK iv got 3 beloved Chihuahua's, they are 3,3,4 months. and i was wondering what you think of my dogs ages as a group? I just love them so dearly i DREAD every birthday of there's. I just wish they lived as long as my African grey parrot,They live 80-90 years and me and him are the same age, and born the same year. sorry going off topic.....So i just want to get your opinion my two 3 year old chihuahua's are not old yet and i have any more years with them right????? (please ease my mind!) Any one have a dog or dogs 3 and up? So well the puppy is on puppy food of course and the two older dogs are on adult food, so i have automatic feeders outside with adult food in them (they eat outside) for the 2 older chi's, I have my youngest chi on a schedule and she eats in her crate and i take her food out after 20 minutes of eating, but now she starting to eat the adult food while outside is it bad for her can she be on a ONLY puppy food diet??? I will not remove the automatic feeders outside i will just be there when she's outside but......she only takes about 4 bites while outside and thats it, will this be OK? OH! i just though of another question to ask, don't want to waste another 5 points,so ill just ask here. SO this is about my chi's being outside, Well while I'm gone they stay outside. thats about 8 hours at the max Iv been hearing that chi's,poodles, small breeds are not meant to be outside, but before i go on let me mention that, there are no Hawks or anything that can harm them where i live BELIEVE ME. Plus they've got a huge dog house in the back, its a dog house made for a large breeds (Its Big!) and they have A LOT of food and water outside, and they seem to love it outside! if i don't bring them in they wouldn't mind staying outside AT ALL. But again like i said people say little breeds are not meant for outside its not good for them "mentally" you are being cruel.... For one they get MAJOR attention and they will never go not kissed Two hundred times a day! So is it bad for them "mentally"??? Thank You So Much!!! Please answer all 3 if you wish i tend to only get answers on one subject but i need help on all 3 Thanks much appreciated! ♥TO: Poppy! You just made my DAY! I thought i was the only person on hear with 3 year old dogs every one's always like i have a year old puppy i have a 2 year old doggy and when i am out on walks or at the dog park I'm talking to other owners there like "how olds your dog?" I replied, with there ages and i ask the same just about l every dog in the dog park is younger then mine! what happens to the older dogs??? lol, sorry for rambling..... for question #2 I'm asking if it is OK that my pup takes a few bites of adult dog food while outside? Thank You SOO Much!TO:Pamela HI, well i don't mean to be rude, but do you know what automatic feeders are? they are feeders designed to feed your dog at a certain time. you put in your dogs weight and age. they are in perfect weight conditions No need to worry, the pup is feed in her crate cause thats her most enjoyed place she will wonder the house for a sec then stay in her crate. I do what makes her happy. I live in California. California is on record the best temperature climate in the world. so no need to worry about that as well. they sleep in the house with me on my bed or in there crate the two older sleep in my bed and the younger one prefers her crate. i have 3 crates side by side.TO:⊂®¥š‡Ι ♥Eli♥ ♥Molly♥ Thank You SO Much For The Advise!!! Do i really sound that childish! haha...I'm actually an adult, but no need to worry I,m still kid in heart! Thats why i guess people assume I'm one, your not the only one :D Thanks again! Oh! yeah your right about canidae! But the thing is we don't have any places where i live that sell that dog food i went to canidae.com and type in my zip code and squat where i live! we have petsmart, petco.animal lovers, pet feeds. In hollywood in the store where the celebrities buy there "puppy mill puppy's" they have canidae, iv been in the store but i never bought anything in it just cause i will never support them!. so No canidae for me =[To:Pamela Well the ones here in CA are made with timers and do not over feed guaranteed, i bought them for 280$ on sale. Let me ask you this what did dogs do 400 years ago??? if your so keen of this subject, What was the chihuahua breed for back in the day where are they originally from??? I don't think they were sitting in a house all day know do i? so got the answers to my questions??? more

Resolved Question: Which Bird would you recommend I get as a pet?

I intend to adopt a bird, not terribly soon but I'm starting the process of figuring out which bird is right for me. I work on a flexible schedule so I have enough time to devote to a bird that needs a lot of attention. I'm looking for a breed that is generally cuddly and bonds well to 1 or 2 people. I had considered an African Grey because I heard they are affectionate, but because I heard they were also very shy I was worried because I would like a bird I could travel with and take outside. I've also considered a quaker parrot. Any ideas on which breed would be best for me?I've been around birds before so I don't mind and can deal with the mess. I know all birds are noisy but I'd like one a little more on the quiet side because I do not live alone. more

Resolved Question: What is a good breed of parrot to put with an eclectus?

I have a 6month old male eclectus. I love him so much and I'm pretty sure he adores me as well. If I was to get another parrot what do you guys recommend? I know that he may lose his bond with me if I get another ekkie, but I was thinking for later on he when I want to expand my 'zoo' of animals. Ive introduced him to an alexandrine, lories, ringnecks, cockatiels and even an african grey. I have heard it is best suited to get another bird his size and with the same intelligence level, but he seems intimdated by them and much rathers the smaller birds so he can be big boss, he isnt aggressive at all and wouldnt hurt a thing. Just wondering what everyones eleses opinion was?? more

Resolved Question: What is a good "big bird" for beginners?

I have had budgies, finches, canaries and lovebirds and I would like to try a more challenging bird like a small parrot. Here in Hong Kong, an African grey is almost 1200 US dollars! (Rip off?) Is there a small parrot for beginners? I have done my research and talked to shop keepers. Please suggest a parrot breed to me, or a "big bird" and the estimated price of the bird and its expenses in US dollars. more

Resolved Question: Question about Amazon parrots?

My husband and I are planning to purchase an Amazon Parrot in the next few months, and I would like other peoples input on what variety to buy. We are most interested in the Double Yellow Headed, but also like the Blue front and the Yellow Nape. We are aware of the possibility of aggression in certain varieties of Amazons, particularly th Yellow Nape, and I have been a parrot owner in the past (grew up with an African Grey), so I am by no means new to the world of birds. However, would really appreciate your personal opinions regarding which breeds are friendlier, louder, better or worse talkers, and also opinions on which varieties may be the better to own down the road should we decide to have a child. (NO bird we own will ever be left unsupervised with a child-we will always take precautions-just wondering if any people out there have found some varieties of Amazons to be easier to own with a family) Answers will be greatly appreciated-thanks!! more

Resolved Question: I've owned a lot of birds, and now I'm wondering what parrot species should be next for me?

I've had dozens of budgies, several cockatiels, several lories, and other non-parrot birds. I've also studied how to care for various species of parrots, so I'm ready to own a brand new, different one. I'm looking for an INEXPENSIVE, TALKATIVE, and NON-SCREAMING parrot, and not as messy as the lories. I've considered the rose-ringed parakeet, the eclectus parrot, the african grey, the white-bellied caique, the galah, and the amazon . . . but I'm so lost what to pick! Which species would best fulfill what I'm looking for? Are there any other good breeds?Right now I live with one cockatiel. I gave away some of the birds because my mother didn't like them. Some got stolen by my neighbours. A few died of disease since there are no avian vets on this island, but I'm going to move to my hometown Tokyo and take good care of my new bird after I start my life alone.Evelyn - Cockatoos can be really loud! Not my choice.Tyed - lmao, I forgot that a galah was a cockatoo, the soft colours made me unconsciously assume that it wasn't a loud bird . . . yes, I'm going to buy the bird in Japan. I don't have the money to ship an animal! Haha. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: How can I transport my African Grey Parrot to England or Europe?

I own a legally purchased, captive breed, African Gray parrot purchased and raised from hatchling. I am currently living in the USA and would like to take a job in England, but do not know how to transport him with me. He is not banded (breeder's personal preference) but does have a clean bill of health from several veternarians. I have called most airlines and they will not transport him overseas. Any informed suggestions?Thank you very much margecutter I called the company you recommended and they will take care of everything from paperwork to shipping and have never had an animal die. more

Resolved Question: African Grey Parrots?

Hi there. I am looking into purchasing a Congo African Grey female. I am going to be purchasing a female, because a good friend of mine has a 10 year old male, and we plan to breed them in the future. The thing is.. My good friend, Pat, says that I need a young bird, so I get a bird that hasnt learned any bad habits, and because they are easier to train and bond with. THEN, i read that Parrots are not sexually mature until about 10 years of age. Would it be an absolute mistake to buy a sexually mature African Grey Parrot? (assuming it has good manners and no horrible vices, etc) or should I just shut up and buy a baby? I also thought that I could buy a female who can lay eggs, and raise a baby and keep that one as my "pet" and keep the other for breeding. Thoughts on this? What would be the best idea?EDIT: i do have "small" parrot experience. Note: Breeding them would be for a small business. Nobody in our state breeds them and we want to offer amazing babies. more

Resolved Question: What are the dangers of.....?

My fiance and I are moving to Boulder Colorado in July, we're currently in South West Florida. We've heard many stories about animals reacting negatively to the altitude change. Currently we live in a city that is 9 feet above sea level, Boulder is over 5,000 feet above sea level... I know for humans we should be drinking more water because the altitude change will cause cases of dehydration... But what should we be looking out for? We have an African Grey Parrot and also a 35 lb mixed breed dog. Any information would be wonderful, thanks. more

Resolved Question: African grey problems.?

I have had this Timneh african grey for a year now i believe he/she is about 6 years of age ( it was an adult when i bought it from the breeder). I think its a boy because i 've had it for quite the while now and i have not yet seen "her" be gravid. I bought her from the man because he wanted to "breed" the birds for money they we're paired without even being sexed and the bird i bought was fighting with the "roommate. They we're in a shed i believe with small cages. The bird is healthy but was a little viscous at first but knows how to wistle a few that i tought her but i want to teach her to talk. I love this bird and i really want "her" to be happy. Also the "breeder who has'nt even gotten a chick from any of his grey's was feeding them only seed diets sunflowers making 90% of the bulk. She loves them and thats how i got her to like me and trust me by using them as rewards. I bought food from petsmart thats made for parrots like grey's and i mix it with her food but she refuses toeat it she eats only the seeds and leaves the food i bought her. I do feed her veggies though but once in a blue moon and after her veggies i give her "regular" food. I give her new water every day and of course i rinse her water bowl real well!. I really would like her to live a long and healthy life. Any tips on how to get her to stop eating the seeds and eat the parrot food. more

Resolved Question: but what kind of bird?

okay, i have an African Grey parrot, her name is Dutchess. I've had her for almost a year now & she's about 20 or so years old. At first, things were pretty rough but with me working with her things got better. She now steps up and gives kisses, which is far from her climbing about the cage and striking at my my hand every chance she got [what she use to do]. I'm now thinking about getting her a friend...question is...what kind? For a while i was thinking about breeding her [for i have reason to believe she was a breeder before] but a few ppl have been telling me that she wouldn't be 'pet material' anymore. so what do i do? i was thinking maybe just getting her a friend but i'm not sure what kind or how to set things up. what kind of bird would be good with her? another grey? or maybe something different? any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks! more

Resolved Question: Does anyone know about Breeding African Grey Parrots?

I Starting to get information on it of course before I make a decision about it. I'm a @ home mom and do have time but wanted to know other people's point of veiw! Thier expirences and knowledge. I have a male and female. Is it true when you breed the female gets an attitude and gets grumpy? I know that the African Grey is becoming extinct, and I don't want this to happen to such a intellegent/great parrot. We need more intellegence in our world. :):) Thanks in advance to all other bird lovers!! more

Resolved Question: Amazon parrot or African Grey?

I am looking into getting a parrot. I have experience with them and I am not worried about having enough time to play with the bird. I will have plenty of time, and there are five people in my family so the bird is going to have lots of attention and plenty of activity. We also have many guests so he will be introduced to all sorts of new people while young. My question is: Which is the more outgoing and affectionate? The (blue fronted or other) Amazon or the African Grey? I've heard a ton of negative stuff about the Grey and some people have told me that the Amazon is really moody and becomes terrible around sexual maturity. I'm attached to the Grey because of its intelligence and loyalty but all the negative information has me looking at the Umbrella Cockatoo and the Blue fronted Amazon. Are these other two breeds worthy equals to the Grey? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! more

Resolved Question: How Do You Pair Up African Congo Greys For Breeding??

What's the best way to safely introduce/pair up a young male & female African Congo Grey parrot to see if they like each other in hopes of eventually becoming a bonded pair for life? I have a young female grey (fully tested, vet cleared healthy & DNA sexed); now I'm looking for her male counterpart to introduce together & see if they get along well enough to eventually become a bonded, proven pair & breed/hand-raise babies. What's the best & safest way to introduce 2 young birds for the first time & subsequent future times to see if they will like each other safely so they learn to "play nice" & eventually form a bonded breeding pair? My girl is just under 1 yr. old; the boy I'm considering is just 1 yr. old, too. I know it takes a few yrs. before they will sexually mature & breed, that's why I want to introduce them early. I am fully aware of "breed" vs. "pet" pairs, the hormone & behavior changes once they become a bonded breeding pair; I'm willing to take that on. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: African Grey companion?

I've recently aquired an African Grey parrot (Kiki) who tends to pluck his feathers. I've learned that Grey's do much better with a companion. I'd preffer a smaller bird, such as a conure, but am not sure if a different breed of parrot would be a compatible friend. I would like to keep both birds in the same enclosure. Does this make sense, and if so, what other breeds of parrots make the best companions for Greys? more

Resolved Question: Can timneh african greys and congo african greys mate? If not, can they still be great to keep together?
